Earlier today, Steven Crowder did a second segment on there only being 2 genders in his “Change My Mind” discussions. I found this session particularly interesting as he had a conversation with both a transgender person, (Male to Female identity,) and an intersex person who says they were born with a Y chromosome and a vagina. (A very real type of intersex defect.) There were a number of things in the conversation that struck me.
Both guests/conversationalists had very large chips on their shoulders, and made a lot of assumptions about people that disagreed with them. Including that we(conservatives, Christians, none LGBT… people) hated them, and were attacking them as being something less than human. That has never been a position I, or anyone I know has taken, but never the less that is all to commonly how we are portrayed and presumed to be. Our ‘friends’ in the media having no small amount of blame for that.
They both argued for ‘their truth’ not ‘the truth,’ and criticized our ability to understand biology. Despite not being able to give a scientific or biological argument for their position. At one point the second guest sited chimerism as an intersex disorder. Which it isn’t. Chimerism is where there are twins in the womb, and one twin absorbs the other completely into itself. In layman’s terms, think extreme conjoined twins.
They focused on feelings, and got defensive when their feelings were not being validated as true when they were not true. This is actually a major problem with the new school curriculum, but I’ll be doing a separate post on that. Probably a video. I have not done one in a while, and all my concerns with the curriculum can’t be articulated quite as well in written form.
They both argued for gender being on a spectrum, but believed that the spectrum had two polar ends. Male and Female. Neither could specify by what criteria an additional gender is defined, how many there were, or even what another gender is.
I’ve consider doing my own “There are only 2 Genders” but do it “I’m intersex, and there are only 2 genders. Change My Mind.” Maybe Canada day… we will see. I took particular exception to the intersex person using their defect to ignore the facts in front of them, and presume to speak for all people with the ‘spectrum’ of intersex defects. There actually is a cluster, not a spectrum. A spectrum requires there to be no defined steps. Each intersex defect has a name, and each has different genetically identifiable characteristics. One might even call it biology and science.
